Horror genre comparisons

Similarities Differences
  • Will have a mysterious background story, which will be an enigma for the opening, teases the audience makes them more intrigues to watch on.
  • Tension building non-Diegetic sound.
  • Dark/abandoned locations, so set the scene. i.e. house
  • Spiritual events occur i.e. ghosts, witches
  • Shadows
  • Suspicious Atmosphere which creates tension with the audience.
  • Fright
  • Death
  • Threats
  • Thriller
  • Unpredictable events
  • Teenagers/children characters
  • Good, usually really innocent and evil present
  • low key lighting
  • a lot of closeup shots
  • Foreign language or characters in the Drag me to hell opening scene
  • In the conjuring we see the doll which could be the main prop of the film, costume makes it look dominant
  • Drag me to hell shows us that there is women who wants to meet the spiritual characters- links may occur to the protagonist as they may come to see them later in the film
  • The Conjuring is based on a true story.
  • At the beginning of the opening to drag me to hell we see a typical teenager at home alone, and things start to act up, unlike the drag me to hell goes straight into the story about how the boy stole a necklace from gypsies and then shows that he cursed for that reason
